Another update, I know this is a bit smaller than the others and the drawing is not very impressive in itself. Just wanted to show that I haven't given up on the project even though I've been busy with other non-arty things. :zombie:

TOAD!! I love Toad, always my Mario Kart go-to guy. I nearly bought a plush Toad the other day, but it was tiny and $15..not alot of bang for my buck. Was this by any chance done in Illustrator? or converted from a pdf to a jpg?

Who, what, pdf? The Illustrator question I can understand but the pdf just seems random :D Perhaps you are thinking psd? It is made in Photoshop and the very most of the content is brush strokes. The pixelated Toad here is made from a sprite which I have enlarged, and he is of course here to symbolise that he was my favourite in SMK as well.

lol go Toad :horns: No I meant pdf, I'll tell you why: it seems here that thelol go Toad :horns: No I meant pdf, I'll tell you why: it seems here that it's not actually black, but a dark grey. This is the single most bizarre thing that happens to me with Illustrator - it's solid black in Illustrator and then I save as a pdf, or export the file to Photoshop and everything that's supposed to be black becomes an obvious dark grey. So any files that I've wanted to upload here that were vectors or done in Illustrator, I have to move to photoshop and paint the greys black or burn tool them. Ridiculous!

Ignore the loop I seem to have gone in at the start of that post, lol.

I loved that loop :) It felt like my mind went into a halt just repeating the little data that was in the buffer. I thought it would have to be something odd at your end, but I thought I'd better check, and you are right; the colour is #141414 instead of #000000. A simple explanation to why this is; I must have drawn with a solid black colour, and then using the colour finder tool to select black when I've been using another colour and accidentally click on a part that had a bit of transparency in it. That is what I wanted to say, but it is in fact not what it is. I've checked the original drawing and the colour is actually pure black, and I thought the grayish colour comes from a conversion error between some of the colour schemes like sRGB to RGB or similar. I tried to repeat the saving to get the colour difference, but I failed, so I can't say for sure why this happens. I'm sure there's a solution for your problem though, why do you have to save it as a .pdf?

Just with Illustrator files, that's what I always save them as and there arent really any other options.. apart from maybe exporting them as something else. You usually use pdf files to print and send to people too. It's just really strange and nobody can give me an answer! very odd.

Aha, I just checked it and yes you are right. I thought the pdf files were mainly and only for acrobat files and I didn't know they used that format for storing illustrator files (I always thought they only used the .ai file type). Now, I did a bit of mucking around and as you say when you do the conversion, saving as a .pdf or an .ai file and then opening them directly in photoshop the colours are as you say this dark gray colour.

I also found out that it is the same result if you export your illustrator image directly to a .jpg, so no luck there either. Using the .svg file format seemed to work though, as opening the file in Inkscape produced the same colours. However, I couldn't export or save the content in Inkscape to a .jpg so not a good solution. Now, finally I found that when creating a new document in Illustrator, it is set to use CMYK colours instead of RGB. Changing the colours to use RGB instead allowed me to save the file as a .pdf, open it in Photoshop as either RGB or CMYK and the black remains pure black #000000. I went back and checked with the CMYK in Illustrator, and whenever I try to save it as a jpeg, or open it in Photoshop either as RGB or CMYK, I get this dark grey colour. So it seems like there is clearly a problem with the colour translation from CMYK to RGB, and I'd avoid using CMYK colours in Illustrator if I were you. Hope this helps :D

I had an inkling it was something to do with that CMYK/RGB translation, thanks for the detective work! Only problem is were always encouraged to use CMYK for things that are going to be printed (and I really should know the exact reason why but I'm terrible) and RGB for things that are going to web. But at the moment, for uploading to here, this could be a solution :D
